An expressionist play based on Ruth Snyder’s murder trial in 1927, Machinal chronicles the life of a young woman who finds herself confined by societal expectations, the patriarchy, and the mechanics of everyday life. A point of release in her otherwise routine and dreary existence prompts her to reclaim her freedom - at any length.
